CRAP – July 27th, 2010

Posted in This weeks CRAP on July 28, 2010 by Shawn

This week’s CRAP crowd was a bit small with only 8 members in attendance: Colonel Kidwell, Mark Fletcher, Ron Calhoun, Victor Phillips, John Martini, Larry Pennington, Todd Simpson, and Dave Rogers. Although the group was small, the conversations were large & informative. Ron introduced us to his new “best friend”, a state-of-the-art Panasonic HD video camera. Wow, this camera is a super nice piece of equipment loaded with many advanced features. He’s has generously volunteered to record Bill Pryor doing demos of his 20 or so various magic effects carried by The Magic Shop. Keep an eye out for the demos to appear soon on ArtiesMagic.Com and its new YouTube Channel.

Other topics included, but were not limited to: discussions on the Art of Showmanship, the upcoming Abbotts Magic Get Together, a new very cool magic effect named Ultracanese, and some simple but very effective mentalism bits. Good nuggets of wisdom flew around the room like disoriented doves confused by a spotlight. Good Times were had by all.

Colonel Kidwell plans to keep us posted on this years 73rd Abbotts Magic Get Together via his mobile phone and laptop. Watch for upcoming convention commentary and video updates from the show’s stage manager himself, Mr. Kidwell.

CRAP for 7/20/10

Posted in This weeks CRAP on July 20, 2010 by Shawn

Our CRAP meeting this week included, Colonel Kidwell, Mark, Todd, Dave, Dennis, Jon, Larry and Victor came back for another load of CRAP. We watched Todd’s copy of Doug Henning’s first television special from 12/26/75. This is the special that had Gene Kelly, Bill Cosby and Julie Newmarr. It was also the special that climaxed with the Water Torture Cell. After we watched this video, as a group we were all reminded how great an entertainer Henning was, and we marveled knowing what we watched had been recorded live, in real time! Something not often seen with magic on television today. There were more “making business better” and website building discussions. Artie unveiled the “Got Magic” black t-shirt with the artiesmagic.com address on it (only 8 bucks for CRAP members!).
Once again magic as a foundation allowed for an evening of camaraderie and fun.

Once again hoping you can share a load of CRAP with us soon.

CRAP for 7/13/10

Posted in Old CRAP on July 13, 2010 by Shawn

Well the CRAP was really flying this week!  Let’s see, there was Artie, Todd, Sonny, Ron, Dave R, A.J.(with his friends Sarah and Jessica),  Spencer and even a couple of first time visitors.  Victor Phillips (of ABRACADABRA Catering and Entertainment) and John Martini both stopped by for some CRAP.  Sal Piacente also came by late for some CRAP.  There were discussions of business trends and how to improve in this economy.  Artie shared the story of the downfall of the annual magic show fundraiser at the Playhouse in the Park.  Abbott’s annual Get-Together was also discussed.  Of course with Sal there was talk of gambling techniques and memory work also going on.   It was an excellent meeting lots of great stories shared and we hope you can come CRAP with us soon!

CRAP for 7/06/10

Posted in Old CRAP on July 9, 2010 by Shawn

It was another load at CRAP this week.  Keeping the conversations lively: Colonel Kidwell, Todd, Peter, Ron, Larry, Dave, Jason visiting from Denver Colorado, Bubby, Mark and a surprise visit from our old friend AJ along with his friend Sarah. AJ is now living in Florida, here’s his email if you would like to stay in touch: ajmagicman@gmail.com. Jokes and magic abounded! Jason was spotted doing some of his mentalism for Jon. Jon was spotted doing some card tricks for Jason.

Sir Patrick has missed the last few meetings due to rehearsals for the new Buddy LaRosa play.

One of the topics often discussed at our CRAPpings is magic on television.  Altho I’m not a member of the Penn Gillette fanclub, I believe in this interview he does an excellent job capsulizing the current trend.

Until next week, keep on CRAPping!

Tony Corinda died on Thursday 1st July in Norfolk.

Posted in Special Reports on July 4, 2010 by Shawn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tony Corinda (1931? – July 1, 2010) is an English magic dealer and businessman who is noted by magicians for having written the book Thirteen Steps To Mentalism

Corinda’s name was Thomas William Simpson. Corinda was a variation on the name Conradi.

In the 1950s and 1960s he had at least two shops in London; prior to this, Corinda had a magic studio where he sold magic tricks, mostly with a mentalist flavour for which he became best known. The Magic Shop in Tottenham Court Road was originally run by Dick Chavel, and later taken over by Corinda. This store was at street level so catered mainly to the lay public, so many of the items sold were either practical jokes or beginners’ tricks, but other items and small illusions for semi-professional magicians and hobbyists were also sold over the counter.

Around the same period, Corinda had the magic concession in Hamleys Toy Shop in Regent Street. This was located in the basement of the store and was run for a period by Ali Bongo, who also demonstrated magic at the Tottenham Court Road location.

Tony Corinda died on Thursday 1st July in Norfolk.
